Residents of Kamenju and Tulwo villages in Kaptama, Mt. Elgon Sub-county are grief stricken after a middle-aged man committed suicide for unknown reasons.
The deceased identified as Andrew Ndiema, aged 35, allegedly went to his brother’s house at 3am on March 7, 2020 to inform him of his intention to commit suicide.
According to the brother of the deceased, Isaac Kibet, Ndiema had knocked at his door at the wee hour of the night and told him that they will meet in heaven before fleeing in a hurry towards the cliffs bordering Kamenju and Tulwo villages.
Ndiema added that he immediately woke up two other brothers to pursue the deceased because he had a history of mental illness.
“I left with two other brothers to pursue Andrew but before we could reach him we heard a scream and a thud,” he narrates.
On realizing that their brother had jumped over the cliff, they raised alarm and informed Franklin Naibei, the Assistant Chief of Kaborom Sub-location.
They then discovered that the deceased had a burst cranium due to the impact of the fall on the rocks beneath the cliff.
The Assistant Chief proceeded to report the matter at Kaptama Police Station.
Mt. Elgon Sub-county Police Commander, Samwel Anampiu, confirmed receiving the report of the suicide at 6 am.
He added that the police visited the scene for inspection and to determine that the deceased had jumped over a 40-metre high cliff.
Anampiu said that the body was transferred to Kiminini Cottage Hospital mortuary in Trans Nzoia County for preservation as investigations are carried out about the incident.
